Tooting My Own Horn

I RAN EIGHT MILES TODAY!!! And I did it in 1:20:54, on the treadmill. (I always feel like I have to put in that disclaimer.) I ran 7 last week, so I needed to add some distance. I'm kinda sorta following Hal Higdon's Half-Marathon plan. I am definitely setting my sights on a half-marathon in October called the Diva's Half-Marathon. They do them all over the country and they look like the biggest party ever! They hand out tiaras and feather boas along the race route, a fireman is at the finish line to hand you a rose and a glass of champange, and the finish medal is AWESOME! If you're interested in finding a Diva event near you, the website is http://www.runlikeadiva.com/. I can't wait now!

The medal has a spot for your picture and it spins!

  1. Wow Linda! I just cannot in my wildest dreams imagine running for an HOUR!! The most I have ever worked up to is 30 minutes and that is with my ipod blasting.

Hey...I have a pace question. I run (jog) at 5.2 on the treadmill which is like a 11:06 pace and I recently read somewhere that you should to for speed first then distance, so today I upped it to 5.6 or like a 10:50 pace. What is a decent pace for a 5K? Do you know?

  2. I tried to look up what the average finish time is for a woman my age. Maybe you can research 5ks in your area, that you would be interested in participating in, and look at past results. They usually break them down by sex and age group. What I love about running is, yes you're competing with others, but you're really out there for yourself, running faster or father, setting personal records and achieving new goals.

I went for distance when I was training with Couch to 5k. That program works you up to a 30 minute or 3 mile run. Since I was slower, I wanted to make sure I could run the entire race, so I trained for distance. I think you should train for speed after you know you can go the distance. My 1st 5k I couldn't run the entire thing (I was in the middle of C25k), so I finished in 42:42. I wanted the accomplishment of running an entire race, so that would set the standard for subsequent races. My first 5k running the entire way was 34:40. My best 5k was 30:39. Now I'm looking to get in under 30:00 or better. I like "slow and steady wins the race."

  3. CONGRATS on the run! You don't have to disclaimer that you did it on the dreadmill--running is running :) I remember the first time I ran 8 miles--it took me three separate tries before I did it, and it felt fantastic!

  4. Thanks Katie! My husband makes me feel like running on the treadmill is easier than outdoors. I know it is, but he hasn't ran more than 3 miles either way, so I just tell him to "shutty!"

  5. That's AWESOME! I can't wait until I have built up the strength and stamina to do an 8 mile run! The Diva half Marathon looks like a blast, I'll have to check it out. Maybe I can make it a long term goal. I've lost 60 lbs but I am still 247, so I have a ways to go but I can already do so much in the gym that I never could before! Thanks for the comment on my blog, it makes me feel a little more "normal" hearing that others have or have had the same struggles. Take care!
